Sarah Arney's many and varied experiences as a student of Southeast Asian ethnic and folk arts, batik artist, textile researcher, and Peace Corps volunteer in Malaysia serve her well in writing Malaysia Batik : Creating New Traditions.
Since an initial stay under Peace Corps from 1977 - 1982, Sarah has returned to Malaysia on three occasions : one brief visit after studying language in Indonesia in 1984 ; from January to December 1985 researching batik as a Fulbright scholar ; and finally from August 1986 under contract with KRAFTANGAN MALAYSIA to write Malaysian Batik : Creating New Traditions. Each return added to her knowledge of the country and love of its people and their handcrafts.
As a Peace Corps volunteer Sarah Arney worked with the Ministry of Education designing educational materials. In 1985 she completed a Master of Arts degree in Southeast Asia studies at Ohio University. During graduate study Sarah developed her interest and understanding of Southeast Asia with special emphasis on culture throungh literature, folklore, and ethnic arts, especially textiles. She is presently using batik to create graphic tropical scenery inspired, like Malaysian batik designers, by the local environment. Originally from the Pacific Northwest region of the United States, Sarah has travelled widely in South Asia, India, and Europe.
